The home page of this web site explains that over time there has been four major spellings of the family name; Maingi, Mangy, Maingay and Mainguy. This section explains when and where the Mainguy spelling originated and how and where it evolved. First click on to see the family tree of Pierre Maingi (1691-1710) for 5 generations. At this time the spelling was changing from Maingi to Maingy. It can also be seen from the tree that later in 1840 a number of family members changed the spelling again to Maingay. However, there were still family members which continued to use Maingy for about another 10 years but around 1850 the two remaining families changed their spelling to Mainguy. This brought an end to the use of Maingy. One of these families start with James Maingy (1804-1883) and the other was William Anstruther Maingy (1807-1886). Both names can be found on the Pierre Maingi (1691-1710) family tree which can be opened by pushing the above yellow button. It is just a coincidence but both of these Mainguy families emigrated to Canada; one to Western Canada while the other settled in Eastern Canada. We will folow both families by the location of where they settled. The James Maingy (1804-1883) will be refered to Western Canada while the William Anstruther Maingy (1807-1886) family will be called Eatern Canada. It should be noted that this can cause a little confusion with the reader as there are certain mebers of both Mainguy families which settled in Eastern Canada but have now moved to Western Canada and others who settled in Western Canada now live in Eastern Canada. We will let future generations sort this one out! Click on to follow the family of James Maingy (1804-1883) to Western Canada.
